Engaging Youth: Participatory Research Through a Photovoice Project in Eastern Europe
Zoë Kessler, PhD, LCSW
Monday, May 5th | 11:45 am-12:45 pm
Professor Kessler will discuss her research with young people in Latvia that grew up in state care. This study employed Photovoice, a participatory action research method, to explore how care leavers in Latvia make sense of their lives and identities. Collaborating closely with participants as co-researchers, the project enabled them to express their lived experiences through photography and personal narratives.
Professor Kessler will share many of the photographs, narratives, and insights from the young people that reveal a nuanced and underexplored dimension of care leavers’ well-being that have practical implications for social work and aftercare services, suggesting the need for more holistic, relational, and ecologically informed approaches.
