Why did you decide to attend Salem State?
Being so close to home, Salem State was not my first choice, but I toured the school and had the chance to meet the field hockey coach at the time. There were a lot of things that came as a surprise to me when touring the campus, but the thing that really set my decision was the field hockey team. Having a chance to practice with them, they were all very welcoming and made me feel as though I was already a part of the team. After that interaction, the choice was simple.
What made you choose the major that you did? Did you consider any other options?
I had a very difficult time deciding what I wanted to do heading into college. My options were extremely varied as I had small interests in a bunch of different areas. However, I knew my favorite classes in high school were always studio production classes and I remember my teacher talking to us about a major in communications. I honestly hadn't heard of it before, but quickly learned that there were a lot of different areas within it, and many areas that I was interested in. Heading into college, I still wasn't sure if communications was something I really wanted to do, but once I sat in my first class which was called Media in our Lives, I knew I was on the right path.
Were you a part of any groups or clubs on campus? What impact did they have on your post-grad life if any?
I played on the field hockey team and was captain for two years. Sports have always been a big part of who I am and being a collegiate athlete helped me grow in ways I never expected. It helped me become stronger both physically and mentally. I learned how to push myself by setting strict goals. When seeing the achievements I was able to accomplish as an athlete, it has brought me to continue pushing myself with that competitive mindset. If there's one thing I've learned as an athlete, it's that hard work truly pays off.
What classes or faculty members had the greatest impact on you?
My junior career seminar class really helped me set myself up to be career-ready. I learned how to properly create an effective resume as well as having more confidence during interviews. While taking that course, I was able to get a part-time job working for a children's app as a content moderator. This came from using the resume I had created in the class as well as the practice and tips for how to nail an interview. It was my first job related to my degree field.
Was there a specific out-of-classroom learning experience that was especially significant to your career preparation?
My internship with Salem State's marketing team has helped me gain a lot of hands-on experience for my career track.
What was your favorite activity or event that you attended?
The blacklight dodgeball event was always one of my favorites. The second year I participated in that event, my team won the "championship" and was awarded with t-shirts and clippercash. It became a very intense event during those finals games and was so much to play in.
What advice do you have for prospective students thinking about following in your footsteps?
If you're having trouble in any of your classes, don't be afraid to go to your professor's office hours. Those hours are for you. Your professors want to see you succeed and they want to help. Talking to a professor one-on-one can help establish what you need to do well and build a stronger connection with them.
What is your best advice for future students?
Don't be afraid to step out of your comfort zone. Taking that first step will make the next ones easier.
Where was your favorite place to study on campus?
The library, specifically the 3rd floor where it was always nice and quiet.
