The O-Team is a group of upper-class students who volunteer to help welcome the incoming class of first-year students each year in August and September. Any current Salem State student can apply to be a member of the O-Team as long as they bring a high level of enthusiasm and dedication to welcoming students to the university.

O-Team members are positive role models for first year students and possess knowledge of campus resources, student organizations, processes, and university events/activities. The primary mission of O-Team is to ensure that first year students have a memorable and informative welcome to ´ºÃÎÖ±²¥. 

This year, there will be two different teams of O-Team:

  1. Day of Service, Convocation and FYRE
  2. Convocation and FYRE only

     

1. O-Team: Day of Service, Convocation and FYRE

O-Team members within this option volunteer their time to help welcome the incoming class of first year students in August that participate in the First Year Day of Service. They will also assist with the new Sophomore Service Saturday event for sophomores. These students would also be expected to participate in Convocation, assist with facilitating a First Year Reading Experience (FYRE) discussion groups and participating in Student Success presentations/ panels.

Responsibilities

  • Attend mandatory training/team-building (Day of Service and Convocation/ FYRE Track O-Team members) on Wednesday, August 25.
  • Sunday, August 29-Tuesday, August 31: We will build a schedule of some different presentations and events that you will work with. *We will plan it so you have breaks.
  • Assist in coordinating and implementing the First Year Day of Service for all first year participants on Monday, August 30.
  • Serve as a volunteer during the annual Convocation for incoming class on Wednesday, September 1
  • Read the FYRE selection over the course of the summer and assist faculty/staff in facilitating a book discussion with an assigned group on Wednesday, September 1
  • Assist in coordinating and implementing the Sophomore Service Saturday for all sophomore participants on Saturday, September 18 
  • Serve as a resource for students regarding academic, campus services, activities, facilities, and other aspects of ´ºÃÎÖ±²¥
  • Work collaboratively with all members of the O-Team and FYE staff
  • Serve as a role model for first year students as well as other members of the O-Team and FYE staff
  • Represent ´ºÃÎÖ±²¥ and First Year Experience accurately and positively

*The schedule of events each member of O-Team helps coordinate will depend on the number of students participating in O-Team each year. FYE is committed to ensuring that the O-Team is refreshed and ready to start the semester on a positive note so the schedule will be built to provide breaks and time off as much as possible.

 

2. O-Team (Convocation and FYRE Only)

O-Team members within this option will be some of the first faces that the Class of 2025 will see at Convocation. These students will also facilitate a First Year Reading Experience (FYRE) discussion groups and participate in Student Success presentations/panels.

  • Sunday, August 29-Tuesday, August 31 (we will build a schedule of some different presentations and events that you will work with. ***We will plan it so you have breaks.
  • Serve as a volunteer during the annual Convocation for incoming class on Wednesday, September 1
  • Read the FYRE selection over the course of the summer and assist faculty/staff in facilitating a book discussion with an assigned group on Wednesday, September 1
