Class of 1969 Raises $135,000 with Class Gift

“As you become alumni of Salem State College, a new opportunity comes to you,” wrote then-SSC President Frederick Meier in the yearbook for the graduating class of ’69. “By being active supporters of the college as alumni, you can give those who follow you a priceless gift. Your success as educated men and women, coupled with your loyalty to your alma mater, will insure the future of Salem State College.” 50 years later, the class of ‘69’s loyalty remains strong.

The 50th year reunion of the class of 1969 took place from May 30 to June 2, 2019, and was full of events and memories, ultimately raising $135,000 for the university with their class gift. Thursday, Friday and the weekend were loaded with events. People caught up and shared stories, participated in service projects and campus tours, attended choral performances and much more.

In the months leading up to the reunion, class members were encouraged to make a gift in honor of their milestone reunion. “When we attended SSC our cost was roughly $250 per year,” Richard Durgan ’69, reunion committee chair, pointed out in a letter to the class. “This totaled about $1,000 for our entire 4-year education. That was quite a deal!” In that spirit, class members were asked to pledge that amount if able toward their class gift.

The four days began with the Reunion Society’s reception, where the class was officially inducted into the society.  On that night they became official members of the society, joining prior year classes who have celebrated their 50th reunion. The following night, the class celebrated their reunion with dinner, dancing and nostalgic reminiscing of their time at Salem State College.

On the final day, the Champagne and Jazz Brunch took place. Here, Richard presented the class gift on behalf of the class.

“We are so thankful to you for your support of Salem State,” said Chris Corrente ’10, ‘12G, vice president of outreach for the Alumni Association, as Richard presented the check.
