Faculty, staff, and administrators are invited to participate in a reading group to explore SSU’s path to becoming a Hispanic Serving Institution. We will engage in readings and discussion with an emphasis on understanding how SSU can embrace and enact an organizational identity to serve Latinx and minoritized populations. The group will read a book by who is a recognized expert on HSI, Becoming Hispanic-Serving Institutions: Opportunities for Colleges and Universities (Reforming Higher Education: Innovation and the Public Good, to discuss how SSU can enroll and educate Latinx students through a culturally enhancing approach.
This book is ideal for higher education practitioners and scholars searching for best practices for HSIs. The content features the stories of faculty, staff, and administrators who are defining “servingness” in practice at HSIs. Servingness is conceptualized as the ability of HSIs to enroll and educate Latinx students through a culturally enhancing approach that centers Latinx ways of knowing and being, with the goal of providing transformative experiences that lead to both academic and non-academic outcomes.
In this book, practitioners who have implemented federally funded HSI grants, including those funded by Department of Education Title III and V grants, tell their stories of success in defining servingness. Specifically, they provide empirical and practical evidence of results and outcomes. It is essential as it provides a framework that simplifies the complex phenomenon known as servingness.
The group will meet biweekly starting on Monday, January 30 from 3:15 pm-4:25 pm.
There are six virtual meeting dates:
