The Oxford Union Society of Oxford University has invited Professor Avi Chomsky to participate in their June 5, 2025, debate on the topic “This House Believes No One Can Be Illegal on Stolen Land.”
The Oxford Union was founded in 1823 by a group of students pushing back against the university’s restrictive free speech policies. In the last 200 years, they have hosted an incredible range of speakers: from the Dalai Lama, President Nixon, and Her Late Majesty Queen Elizabeth II, to global icons like Morgan Freeman and Shakira. One of their most famous traditions is their debates, which ask the most pressing questions of our time.
Dr. Chomsky was selected due to her distinguished career as a historian, activist, and scholar of immigration, labor, and colonialism. Dr. Chomsky is Professor of History and Coordinator of Latin American, Latino, and Caribbean Studies at ֱ, and her work has critically examined the historical roots of migration and the structural inequalities that shape immigration policies today. Her influential books, such as Undocumented: How Immigration Became Illegal and They Take Our Jobs! provide a vital historical and political analysis of how borders and citizenship are constructed.
