Oct 14, 2020

For her work as the president and founder of North Shore Pride, Hope Watt-Bucci, PhD ‘96G has been named the 2020 recipient of the ֱ Alumni Association’s Dr. Marilyn Flaherty '54 Distinguished Alumna Award. Her dedication to volunteerism is inspiring to fellow alumni and students alike and best exemplifies the essence of this award.

The Dr. Marilyn E. Flaherty distinguished alumnus/a award recognizes an individual who upon graduation from ֱ, has distinguished himself or herself through their outstanding professional accomplishments.

Hope has been with North Shore Pride since its inception and says she has seen so much support for the education and advocacy the organization provides in the community. “We receive many messages of encouragement and gratitude for standing up and standing out against prejudicial treatment of LGBTQ persons in our community, whether it be a hug from the mother of a 10-year-old trans girl at North Shore Pride, or an 85-year-old man attending his first Pride event, the feedback has been tremendous.”

When she is not running North Shore Pride, Hope serves on the ֱ Alumni Association Board of Directors and according to Mike Mitchell '07, assistant director for alumni relations at Salem State “Hope is a great friend and volunteer to ֱ.  She has committed to diversity and inclusion, as well as social justice, in all that she does.

North Shore Pride Inc.’s mission is to promote the general welfare and unity of the lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, and queer community within the North Shore, and to advocate for the acceptance of the members of the LGBTQ community by the broader North Shore community through community education, fundraising and working with community members and groups.
