Elevator Pitch

Whether you're attending a career fair, meeting a recruiter for the first time, or networking at company events, having a well-practiced elevator pitch or self-introduction ready to go is always a great strategy!

Here are some things to keep in mind when crafting your elevator pitch.

  • Know your audience: What do they value? What are they looking for?
  • Know what you are looking for: Do you want to develop a skill, enter a career path, chase an ambition?
  • Know what makes you an asset: What do you bring to the workplace? Are you a team player, quick learner, or have great experience in the field?

Here is a template you get you thinking about your elevator pitch:

“Hello, my name is_____ and I am completing a______ degree in______ at Salem             State University. I am interested in a career in_____ in the ______field(industry).â€

Remember, the introduction is about you, so adapt the above to fit your experience, include your current position or title if you have one! You can also include any student organizations or sports you’re in, or volunteer work you’re proud of. You can even share briefly about an internship or role you had that you were passionate in or developed skills at. The goal is to keep your introduction to 60-seconds or less. Remember, you’re just starting the conversation, so you don’t need to be detailed – let the details come naturally through conversation!
