Jun 26, 2018

Christopher Corrente, of Lowell, is the recipient of the Salem State Alumni Association’s George Ellison Volunteer of the Year Award for 2018.

Presented by Alumni Association President Joseph Wamness during a ceremony on campus on June 10, the award recognizes an individual who the president of the association believes reflects the values of the board of directors, and contributes greatly to the university.

“I must say that Chris has gone far above and beyond any expectations for all of the four years that he has served on the board,” said Wamness. “Chris Corrente is a very dedicated and productive alumnus whose commitment to the Salem State will continue to grow as he provides dynamic leadership and energy to the association in the years ahead.”

Corrente is a proud “double Viking,” as he holds a bachelor’s degree in history and a master’s of education degree in higher education and student Affairs. As an undergraduate, Corrente made an early commitment to Salem State through his involvement and leadership in numerous student organizations and civic engagement initiatives.

“His dedication to the university in those earlier years not only impacted his desire to continue his involvement at Salem State upon graduation, but encouraged him to pursue a career in higher education and student affairs,” Wamness said.

At Salem State, Corrente served as an academic success coach within the Center for Academic Excellence, where he was instrumental in the development and implementation of first-year programming and academic advising. He was recognized in 2015 as the recipient of the Outstanding First Year Advocate Award for his dedication to the first-year experience and for contributions made to Salem State.

Today, Corrente continues his career experience at the University of Massachusetts - Lowell where he oversees academic advising, retention and student success initiatives within the university’s Francis College of Engineering.

In 2014, Chris was appointed to the Alumni Association Board of Directors, serving as chair of the Young Alumni Committee as well as chair of the Development Committee. In anticipation of the Class of 2010’s fifth year reunion, Corrente served as chair of the organizing committee and assisted with the establishment of the Class of 2010 Scholarship Award.

Corrente was recently selected to serve as the association’s vice president of outreach. He is also providing leadership to the Global Day of Service and other service project initiatives in the area.
