Nov 4, 2024

Salem State’s Assistant Vice President for HSI-MSI Initiatives, Dr. Elisa Castillo, and Julissa Colón, the Founding Director of El Centro at Holyoke Community College, were invited by , leading HSI scholar and author, to record an episode of the podcast ¿Qué Pasa, HSIs?

The episode, titled “The New England HSI Movement,” discusses the Hispanic servingness movement in Massachusetts and across the New England region; the Inaugural New England Hispanic and Minority Serving Institution Conference held at Salem State this past July, funded by a HEIF grant from the Massachusetts Department of Education; and the many ways the Commonwealth is supporting HSI efforts.

Elisa shares Salem State’s journey on the Roadmap to Servingness as an emerging HSI, while Julissa contrasts that with the story of Holyoke Community College, one of the first HSIs in Massachusetts with a longer history of servingness. Other topics of discussion include the unique identities of New England’s Latines, i.e., Dominicans, Puerto Ricans, and Brazilians, and the need for a Caribbean-specific approach to servingness.
