Salem State’s credit recovery program provides crucial support

May 3, 2023

Paige Bowen ’24, a third year student at Salem State, is currently minoring in psychology, and considering pursuing a major in the subject. “In high school, I received my certification to teach infants, toddlers, and preschool-aged students,” she says. "I love working with kids—you get to see a snapshot of who they become when they’re older—and my courses in psychology are building on my experience in early education.”

Amidst a busy schedule and the pressure of earning a degree, a key pillar of support for Paige has been Salem State’s continuing education credit recovery program. “The credit recovery program allowed me to take a class over the summer, which was a huge help,” she says. “Without it, I wouldn’t have been able to catch up on the courses and credits I need to graduate on time—it helped me get back on track for earning my bachelors.”

Paige was mentored by Rebecca Beukman, a graduate student and success coach in the continuing education credit recovery program. Paige credits Rebecca with helping her improve her organization skills and manage her work load. “She was extremely supportive,” says Paige. “It was a pleasure getting to know her over the course of those six weeks.

Paige credits many other members of the Salem State community with fueling her aspirations, explaining that her friends and professors have all provided her with crucial support throughout her educational journey. “Everyone I’ve met here has helped me feel more comfortable with who I am,” she says. “They’ve enabled me to find methods of studying and learning that work best for me.”

“Salem State is such a diverse, engaging place,” she continues. “Everyone here is extremely supportive—you’ll find mentors and collaborators in your classes, clubs, and around campus.”
