What made you choose Salem State, and what is the one thing you think a prospective student should know about our campus community?

I chose Salem State because of its smaller class sizes and community feel. I knew I would perform better academically in a space where I could build intimate relationships with my peers and professors. Perspective students should know that both staff and faculty are committed to our success as students, and you will feel the support provided by our campus community.

What have you enjoyed most about your experience living on campus?

Living on campus, I have enjoyed connecting with my peers and meeting people from all over the state. There is absolutely nothing better than being able to go a couple of feet and be at the door of your best friend. Some of my favorite memories are from late-night adventures to the dining hall for ice cream! I also love how active and friendly our campus is.

What are you involved in on campus? (Student groups, clubs, organizations, jobs, internships, honors, or athletic affiliations)

I have worked closely with the Center for Civic Engagement as a Civic Fellow and on numerous events there, as well as with the Berry Institute of Politics as a Vikings Vote ambassador. I was a senior resident assistant in Marsh Hall. I am a member of our Honors program. I interned with a community organizing group called Neighbor to Neighbor in their Lynn chapter.

Can you describe the educational value and affordability you’ve experienced at ´ºÃÎÖ±²¥? How has the university supported your academic journey regarding quality and accessibility?

The educational value I received from Salem State is unmatched. I am very pleased with the education I received, particularly from our sociology department. The faculty in the department are incredibly knowledgeable in their respective subject areas. In my experience, our professors can ensure that high-level concepts are attainable to students and provide additional resources to support students who may be struggling.

Could you discuss the relationships you’ve developed with faculty members at Salem State and how these relationships have influenced your learning and personal growth?

The relationships I have developed with both faculty and staff have helped shape me into the person I am today. I have felt firsthand the commitment faculty and staff make to student success. My personal growth has been fostered by a group of dedicated individuals who saw something in me when I couldn't see myself. My community has uplifted and inspired me with consistent support and adulation. I was encouraged to lean into my authentic self and show up on days even when it was hard, but knowing I had the support of my faculty made it even more worth it.

Salem State emphasizes hands-on learning experiences. Can you share any memorable experiences where you’ve applied classroom knowledge in real-world settings through projects?

Applying my sociological knowledge in my community organizing has been incredibly impactful. Conceptualizing theoretical frameworks in real-life situations was very rewarding. The education I received has elevated my problem-solving skills.

What have you accomplished during your time at Salem that you are most proud of?

I am most proud of the connections I have made during my time at Salem State. We have some incredible faculty and staff who work tirelessly to support and uplift students. I have witnessed my community go above and beyond for each other, and it makes me feel like I belong. I have pride in the relationships I have built with my peers because there is nothing more important to me than my community. Being a Viking is more than just being a Salem State student; it is a way to approach building community.

In what ways has Salem State demonstrated its commitment to your success, both academically and personally? Can you share any specific instances where the university has gone above and beyond to support you?

The Berry IOP and Center for Civic Engagement have given me numerous opportunities to network with policymakers and activists. They have both shown up for me on more than one occasion by providing opportunities for me to showcase my advocacy and community-building skills. I often reflect on the opportunity to meet and listen to one of Malcolm X's daughters, Professor Ilyasah Shabazz. We shared an intimate moment that has further propelled me into my advocacy work. The IOP and CCE foster inspiration and provide you with resources to support my dreams.

As you near graduation, how do you feel Salem State has prepared you for your future career? What resources or opportunities have been particularly valuable in this regard?

I feel Salem State is constantly providing me with career opportunities. Faculty share job postings, staff remind you of your purpose, and Salem State's alumni network provides support to pursue your career goals. The Berry IOP and Center for Civic Engagement have proved particularly valuable with the networking opportunities that have been provided for me.

What are your post-graduation plans, and how do you believe your time at Salem State has equipped you for success in pursuing them?

I believe Salem State has not only equipped me with the educational fortitude to pursue my career goals they have also helped shape my personal growth as a person. Having the support of faculty and staff has encouraged me to take the growth edge and believe in myself. I have become a more confident and self-assured individual because of the relationships I have built here; the academic and personal success I have experienced makes me excited to pursue my post-graduation plans, knowing I will continue to have this support.
