How has attending a Hispanic and minority-serving institution (HSI-MSI) shaped your college experience?
Attending an HSI-MSI has made my college experience special by providing a welcoming and supportive environment. Salem State has a diverse community of students and faculty, making me feel like I belong. They offer extra help with academics through tutoring and mentoring, which makes it easier to succeed. There are also many opportunities to get involved on campus and meet people who can support future career goals. Overall, being part of an HSI or MSI has helped me grow both personally and academically.
What does being part of an HSI-MSI community mean to you?
Being part of an HSI-MSI community means feeling a strong sense of belonging and support. It involves being surrounded by individuals who understand and celebrate diverse cultures and backgrounds. This community provides opportunities for academic growth, personal development, and meaningful connections with peers and mentors. It also offers access to tailored resources and programs that help minority students succeed, fostering an inclusive environment where I can thrive.
What drew you to Salem State, and how has the university supported you, inclusive of your cultures and identities?
I was drawn to Salem State for its strong academic programs, welcoming community, and commitment to diversity. The university has supported me through cultural clubs, inclusive events, and resources celebrating and respecting my background and identity. This environment has made me feel valued and empowered throughout my academic journey.
What clubs, organizations, or programs have helped you build community on campus?
As a resident assistant (RA), I’ve had the opportunity to build community through campus-wide programs and events. Being an RA has helped me connect with students and foster a welcoming environment. Participating in cultural clubs and student government has also allowed me to connect with peers with similar backgrounds and interests, further enhancing my sense of belonging.
How has your cultural background or identities shaped your experience at Salem State? Have you been able to celebrate or share your heritage or identities on campus?
My cultural background has significantly shaped my experience at Salem State. The university has given me opportunities to celebrate and share my heritage, especially during events like Black History Month. I’ve been able to help organize and participate in events that highlight Black culture, history, and accomplishments. These moments have allowed me to connect with others and educate the broader community, enriching my experience and strengthening my sense of belonging.
