SSU Freezes Tuition and Mandatory Fees for 2023-24 Year

Jun 13, 2023

Salem, Mass.—ֱ’s Board of Trustees unanimously voted to freeze tuition and mandatory fees during the Fall 2023 to Summer 2024 academic year for all students—in-state and out-of-state undergraduate day, continuing education, and graduate degree-seeking. This is the second time in recent years that the board has frozen tuition and mandatory fees in support of Viking students.

“Many of our students and their families are still struggling in the post pandemic economy,” said President John Keenan. “Freezing tuition and mandatory fees for the upcoming year is one way that we can help our students stay on the path to earning their degrees. He continued, “Freezing tuition and mandatory fees for all Viking students for the upcoming year represents an investment in our recently approved strategic plan entitled ‘Meeting the Moment,’ which is centered on student success.”

Mandatory fees include the following:

  • University Fee supports a majority of the educational and general activities that are not funded by state appropriation.
  • Capital Improvement Fee provides additional support for critical maintenance, debt service, and repair of facilities.
  • SGA Fee funds activities overseen or conducted by the Student Government Association on behalf of undergraduate students.
  • Differential Fees apply to students in selected majors. Typically, these are programs that have high costs of supplies, consumables, or other costs, along with other factors. The differential fees recommended for FY24 are the same as in FY23.

“The Board is committed to ensuring higher education remains affordable for all who wish to pursue it at this institution,” said Dr. Cherié Butts, Chair of Salem State’s Board of Trustees. “The majority of our students work at least one job to help pay for their education, which underscores the need to remove financial barriers. Approving this freeze reflects our continued commitment to being student-centric with our decision making.”

ֱ is a welcoming, student-first university. Recent student support efforts include:

  • The university froze tuition and fees in the FY2021-22 academic year to support students during the pandemic.
  • The university increased financial aid to undergraduate students by 50% during the past five years, providing approximately $8 million dollars in aid.
  • 62% of undergraduate students received institutional financial support last year.
  • For the FY23 academic year, students received Viking grants totaling $2,638,000. This support is in addition to completion grants awarded to students.
  • The university awards over 210 additional donor provided scholarships to students each year and has increased emergency funds for students in need, keeping them on track to graduate.

Tuition and fees for Massachusetts residents is $11,978.80 for full-time undergraduate day commuter students and $499.20 (per credit) for in-state graduate students. The total price per credit for evening/continuing education undergraduate courses also remains the same at $451.20 per credit for in-state students.
