Hispanic & Latinx Heritage Month Keynote: Alejandra Campoverdi I 11-12:30 pm

Keynote speaker Alejandra Campoverdi is a women's health advocate and national bestselling author of FIRST GEN: A Memoir, an unflinching reflection on navigating social mobility as a first generation Latina and the unacknowledged emotional tolls of being a trailblazer. 

Gassett Fitness Center Member Programming: Pickleball I 5:30-7 pm

Calling all Gassett Fitness Center members, come play pickleball! We are offering co-curricular activities for all membership types. Whether you are a current student, alumni, faculty/staff, retiree, or other, you are invited to participate in this series of programs.

Criminal Court and the Application for Arrest Warrants Against Named Hamas and Israeli Leaders I 6:30-8 pm – Online

Established in 2002 by the Rome Statute, the International Criminal Court (ICC) in The Hague investigates and prosecutes individuals charged with the gravest international crimes: genocide, war crimes, crimes against humanity and the crime of aggression. This talk will explore the court’s history, its functions and jurisdiction, and the role of the Office of the Prosecutor. In particular, the webinar will discuss the recent application of the Office of the Prosecutor for arrest warrants pertaining to the war in Gaza.

Come Celebrate the Newly Transformed Mary G. Walsh Writing Center! I 2:30-4 pm

We are excited to announce the opening of the newly transformed Mary G. Walsh Writing Center. The new center consolidates all the SSU writing and writing support programs and seeks to promote, foster, and nurture a culture that values writing and the teaching of writing at the university and in the Greater Salem community. 

Please join us to celebrate the center and learn more about how we can support instructors and students at SSU and beyond. Refreshments, snacks, and surprises will be served!

Panel Discussion: Hispanic-Latino/a/e/x : What's in the Label? I 3:30-4:30 pm

The history of terms--from AfroLatino to Xicanx—reveals the heterogeneity of peoples and the power of collective and individual identification. This panel, part of Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month, will discuss why and how we use labels and the ways that people of Brazilian, Cape Verdean, and Haitian background do and do not relate to terms such as Hispanic, Latino/e/x, and Afro-Latinx.

SSU Chief of Police Swearing In Ceremony I 4-6 pm

President Keenan and the Board of Trustees of ´ºÃÎÖ±²¥ cordially invites campus community members to the swearing-in of fourth generation Viking, Chief Trish Murphy ’06 in the Sophia Gordon Center for the Creative and Performing Arts.

A reception will follow the formal ceremony in the atrium of the Sophia. We hope you will join us for this special event!

Talk: What’s Going On With Immigration? Is It a "Crisis"? I 3:30-4:30 pm

This talk, hosted by Avi Chomsky PhD of Salem State's history department, will demystify facts and debates about immigration, including how it's become such a hot-button issue, policies the US has implemented, changes in immigration patterns over the past 20 years, and how pervasive myths distort the way we think about the topic.

This event is part of Hispanic and Latinx Heritage Month.

Discussion: Banned and Challenged Books I 2:30-4:30 pm

The American Library Association's theme for Banned Books Week 2024 (September 22-28) is "Freed Between the Lines." Read a banned or a challenged book and join us in a discussion. This event is open to SSU community.

Participants can read banned books through SSU library, NOBLE public libraries, or Boston public library eBook collection. Ask a librarian!

Board Game Night I 4-6 pm

Program coordinators for the Emerging Scholars Program are leading a board game night! Kick back and enjoy a fun event with games, snacks and new friends!

Workshop - Using Sensory Engagement Strategies to Improving Health for Older Adults with Dementia I 5-6:30 pm

This workshop offers healthcare practitioners techniques for exploration with a variety of materials and sensory engagements with the goal of improving health, well-being and functional status of older adults and persons faced with physical, cognitive and emotional health challenges. Demonstrations of techniques to generate embodied engagement in small group practice - breath-work, simple bilateral stimulation movements, voice activation, sounding exercises, and sensory stimulation. We’ll explore playful, failure free processes that harness strengths and capabilities, and boost self-esteem. A person-centered Montessori approach- choice, quality materials, environment organized for success-enables adults to find creative voice and reclaim agency.

Mario Kart Tournament – 6-8 pm

Compete with your friends to see who is the fastest racer! Whether you prefer Bowser or Baby Luigi, Mario Kart is sure to bring back childhood memories. No pre-registration is required.

Lecture Series - Holocaust Archaeologies I 6:30-8 pm

The investigation of Holocaust sites using archaeological methods has emerged in recent years as a new sub-discipline. In this lecture, Professor Caroline Sturdy Colls will discuss her work at two sites of persecution – Treblinka and Alderney – highlighting how innovative, interdisciplinary approaches have led to new spatial, historical and material understandings of these landscapes of mass violence.

Fourth Dimension Tap Company I 7:30-8:30 pm

Join us as we open our fall season with Fourth Dimension Tap Company! We want to welcome the community back to campus and have designated this event a Salem Night. Salem residents admitted free with ID at the door. 

Students and individuals under 18 admitted free.

We're excited to head back to Olde Salem Greens for year two of intramural golf! Campus Life and Rec provides transportation and nine holes of golf.

Intramural Volleyball Registration Ends

We're bringing intramural volleyball to the fall by popular request! Our indoor, co-ed league is the perfect mix of competition and fun for experienced and new players.
