Subject: Matter Brings Cutting-Edge Tap Dance and Live Music to the Gordon Center January 16

Dec 23, 2019

Choreographer Ian Berg brings his Boston-based company Subject: Matter to Salem State’s Sophia Gordon Center for Creative and Performing Arts for a night of cutting-edge tap dance, accompanied by a live music quintet. Berg’s company explores the intersection of tap and jazz in this program which takes place Thursday, January 16 at 7:30 pm.

The evening consists of two original works. “Blowout” is a reimagining of Herbie Hancock’s soundtrack for Michelangelo Antonioni’s 1967 film Blow Up.  Featuring new high energy arrangements, this work is sure to keep audiences on the edge of their seats.

The second part of the evening, "Songbook" is a collection of dances made to contemporary arrangements of American popular songs and jazz standards. This piece is classic tap dance and jazz with some new twists!

Ian Berg is a Boston-based tap dancer originally from Chicago, IL. Berg has been dancing since an early age and has training and performance experience in tap dance, ballet, modern dance, jazz, and a variety of other styles. He is a member of the renowned Chicago based tap company MADD Rhythms. Berg is also a musician, composer, and arranger of music, and an alum of The School at Jacob’s Pillow and the Boston Conservatory.
