Summer 2023 Study and Travel: WWII and the Holocaust in Italy and Southern France

Join Professors Mauriello, of the Salem State History Department and Center for Holocaust and Genocide Studies, and Regina Kazyulina, CHGS research associate, for a summer study and travel course on WWII and the Holocaust in Italy and Southern France from July 5-19, 2023.

Students can register for HST 502 (undergraduate history or World Cultures credit in general education) or HST 991 (graduate). Teachers receive 67.5 PDPs from Commonwealth for registering and completing HST 991. Scholarships for registered students are available through the CHGS or the Center for International Education. There are a limited number of "travel only" spaces available for community members and alumni beginning on January 20, 2023.

The course begins with two full days of seminar from July 5-6 on campus or hyflex remote analyzing WWII and the Holocaust in southern Europe with particular attention to military conflict in Italy, fascism, occupation and the persecution and murder of Jews during the war years. These seminar days are followed by twelve days of international travel Italy and Southern France to museums, historical sites and group tours of locations where this history happened. Site visits include:

  • Rome: (Via Rasella, the Ardeatine Caves, Museum of the Historical Liberation of Rome, the Jewish Museum of Rome, National Museum of Palazzo di Venezia. Free day to visit other museums and sites in Rome.
  • Florence: (Florence American Cemetery and Memorial, Platform 16 Deportation Memorials, Great Synagogue & Jewish Museum. Free day to visit other museums and sites in Florence
  • Genoa, Nice, and Aix-en-Provence: (Camp des Milles internment and deportation camp). Free day to visit other museums, sites and beaches in Nice)
  • Marseille: (Memorial des Camps de la Mort, Synagogue Breteuil and tour of the Jewish District. Free day to visit other museums and sites in Marseille)

There will also be free time in each of these exciting cities to explore culture, music, restaurants, sites and museums.
