Salem State student Carlos CuevaCaro '25, of Swampscott, is interning with the Welcome Immigrants Network in Salem this summer to support and empower immigrant communities on the North Shore.
Carlos, a history major and sociology minor, is involved with the Student Historical Association on campus. He spoke to Salem State about his experience at his internship.
“I think that one of the first steps to address any current problem, especially for social issues, is to learn its history, where it came from, and how it ended there,” he said.
“I found my internship through my academic advisor. I'm working with in developing visual material for newly arrived immigrants regarding their experiences, rights, and common life needs.”
“I've learned how to communicate ideas to different groups of people, not only thinking of how to convey information, but which kinds of information they would be most interested in. My most rewarding moment has been when a newly arrived immigrant, many of them without any idea of where to even start, seeks our help and finds the help they need for restarting their lives here,” Carlos said.
“At Salem State, I have gotten to know people with similar interests as me and found support and recognition from my teachers.”
