  • Speakers for stereos should be of a reasonable size, and subwoofers and amplifiers are strongly discouraged. If a resident does use these items, s/he may be asked to lower the volume if it disturbs other residents or the noise level is inappropriate.
  • Tapestries and similar hangings are not allowed to cover a door, the majority of a wall above a bed, or hanging from the ceiling as this could present a fire/safety hazard.

What to Leave at Home

  • LED Strip Lights, Duct tape and tacks (items that could potentially damage the walls)

  • Loft and platform beds

  • TV wall mounts
  • Candles and incense
  • Space heaters
  • Weapons of any kind, items capable of producing projectiles, or any dangerous item (e.g knives, switchblades, etc.). 
  • Dangerous or caustic chemicals
  • Hookahs
  • Hoverboards
  • Extension Cords
  • Halogen/Octopus Lamps
  • Residents may possess upholstered furnishings that carry a label of California Test TB 117. All items must be approved by the Professional Staff of the building.
  • Grills (charcoal or gas)
  • Air conditioners
  • Electrical appliances with exposed heating elements, including toasters, toaster ovens, coffeemakers, hot plates, deep fryers, soldering irons, and hot pots without on/off switches (Allowed in apartments)
  • Pets (with the exception of fish and those permitted under the American Disabilities Act/service animals) in no bigger than a 10-gallon tank.
  • Microwaves (over 700 watts)
  • Refrigerators (over 700 watts, 10 amps or 4 cubic feet)
  • In Charlotte Forten Hall, students are not permitted to bring refrigerators as there is one provided by ´ºÃÎÖ±²¥.
  • Water coolers
  • Drugs/Paraphernalia (narcotics/ recreational or/and medical marijuana)
  • Marijuana storage
  • Alcohol containers (decorative or otherwise) or paraphernalia (for example bottles, cans, funnels, leg taps, and so on.)

Microfridges

Because of the electrical system in the residence halls, microwaves have typically not been allowed in student’s rooms. In an effort to allow microwaves that will not overload the electrical system, we have researched the following options which are the only way a microwave will be allowed in student’s room. 

All microwaves will be inspected to confirm compliance with options A or B. Failure to meet requirements will result in microwave or refrigerator being turned away at move-in.

Option A

Personal Microwave and Refrigerator

Refrigerator (cannot exceed 700 watts, 10 amps or 4 cubic feet) and a microwave (700 watts or less) but we ask that you do not operate them at the same time to help reduce potential issues within the residence halls.

A power strip or surge protector does not meet requirements to allow a microwave into the residence halls.

Option B

MicroFridge

Rent a MicroFridge by calling 1.800.637.7567, or visiting . Units will be delivered directly to your room after move-in! You can also purchase a MicroFridge from a retailer of your choosing.

 

Residence Life Policies

The university is not responsible for any damage or theft of your personal belongings, for any reason. Be sure you protect your valuables with your family's homeowners insurance or by purchasing renter's insurance. The university provides information and recommends a theft and fire insurance company.
